Creating Categories using the Category button or F7 key

This operation works in New or Edit Record mode, or even in Detail View mode. You do not have to Edit a record to add it to a Category.

Click the Category button bottom left side or press F7 key on your keyboard. If the Category or Categories is in the displayed list, check the Category or Categories you want to attach the record to and click Save.

If you want a new Category then click New, name the Category, click OK, click Yes if you want it to Upload, then check the box to include this record in the Category. Click Save. Repeat as necessary.

Creating Categories from Topic

The first step is always BACK-UP your database.

The second step is to determine what Categories you want for your website; get organized first!

Creating Categories in BookTrakker

The Catalog tab (along the left at the bottom) is NOT used in the process at all.

Step by Step directions for New Category destination lists.

1. Click Hit Lists tab on the left.

2. Click New. Click OK. Click into Search Field, select Status. Click below Status, select Topic.
Over on the right, below Available, type in your first Topic you want to convert to a Category.
Click Execute. Confirm that you got the expected records, then click the Hit List tab on the left.

3. Click the Category List Manager tab below the Delete button. Click the Create Target Category
List button. Type in the name of the Category you want to replace Topic. Click OK. Click the
dropdown button on the right side of the field where you have your new Category name, and
reselect it from the list. Notice the Add Records to Category List button now works.

By definition, if you already have a Category created then you only have to click the
Dropdown button to select that Category. You only have to do the reselect method if you just
created a New Category.

4. Click the Add Records to Category List button. Confirm.

5. Click the Hit Lists tab below the Execute button. Find your new Category list. Select it. At
the top you should see a bunch of numbers, representing the books in your Category.

6. To the left of this are two check boxes. Check the Upload Cat. List box if it is not already
checked. (Clicking Show Available is optional)

Repeat steps 1-6 for each succeeding new Category.

When you are done upload All Online Inventory to the sites you want Categories to display.

Caution: ABE prefers no more than 40 Categories, but will allow you to have as many as 100.

If you forgot to check the box to use the Category online then do Tools > Options > Online
and click the Categories Online button to set all Categories to be uploaded.
